Rukmava Chatterjee-Queen of Thorns
Water is life. Throughout human history, there has been significant interest in developing functional materials which can either repel water (rain) or harness moisture (dew/fog) from air. Motivated by thorns of cacti, a waxy coating was fabricated which can collect water from ambient vapor. The coating’s micrograph reveals a water drop (red) mounted on its crystalline shards. Such strategies pave the path for design of advanced materials that can withstand environmental challenges.
